There are so many advantages to renting a holiday home vs. a hotel room, but there are also a few important questions to ask during the booking process. Read here to find out more.

1. Is the price you’re giving me all-inclusive? This may seem like an obvious question, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t ask, and are then left with a sour taste in their mouths (a recent survey in Spain, for example, showed that over 70% people STILL don’t read the small print and go ahead and sign for almost anything). Good companies or experienced individual owners will make this all clear, but if you’re unsure, it’s best to ask. Is VAT included, or charged apart?

2. Is there a charge for a late arrival? Many low-cost flights can be low cost, as they have the unsociable hours and often arrive at the airports which are a little further out from the centre. If this happens to you, it’s worth checking if there will be any extra charge. Often companies have normal office hours, and any arrival outside of this may incur a charge. Or if it’s a private owner, then they may have to get up and go to work like a normal day, and if you don’t arrive until 1am, they may feel they need to charge you a small amount to compensate. Either way, it’s a good question to ask.

3. Are sheets and towels provided? It’s always best to check, as some rentals expect you to bring these things. The majority of rentals will be serviced apartments, so clean bed linens and towels are usually included. Those that don’t tend to be rural houses/cottages. Also check things like a hair-dryer, and things that could save you space whilst packing/planning.

4. How do I get to the apartment? If you’re visiting a city for the first time and are not familiar with the different neighbourhoods, ask for detailed instructions of how to locate your property – there’s nothing worse than traipsing the streets with suitcases after a journey. OK, there is – if it’s raining.

5. How do we collect the keys? Again an important one as it could influence the time you would like to arrive. Do you need to go to an office? Will the owner or a representative meet you there? Many people forget about this arrangement when booking, just glad that the booking is over and done with, so don’t forget to ask, preferably before booking.

6. What time is Check-in and Check-out? Most apartments adhere to the hotel rules, which is normally check out at 11am, or sometimes a little earlier, and check in at 2pm or 3pm – with the time in between to clean. Obviously a hotel room is easier and quicker to clean as it’s smaller. A whole apartment may need more time. If you arrive before check in time, it’s worth checking if you’ll be allowed to check straight in or not. There may be clients leaving on the same day you leave, for example, and they won’t want to be turfed out early, just so you can get in.

7. Can I bring my pet? This is almost always clear from the start, but if you don’t see any specific preferences, you can always ask.

8. Can I pay with a credit card? Bear in mind that most apartments do not have credit card facilities as you would have at a hotel reception. Unless you have paid for your stay up front (not the usual process with apartments in my experience) then you will more than likely have a balance and returnable damage deposit to pay – often in the currency of your destination. Carrying cash is not always the preferred option, so check the possibilities. Will the owner accept traveller’s cheques?

Barcelona actually has 2 patron saints – Santa Eulalia, who is often called the children’s saint, and Our Lady of Mercy, or “La Mercé”. Find out here about traditions and festivities marking the week of September 24th.

What started out as paying homage to a Saint – Our Lady of the Sea – has now transformed itself into a full-blown “fiesta” in Barcelona, and if you’re lucky enough to be visiting during the week of September 24th, then you’ll be able to experience the fun and games that accompany the celebrations. Many of the museums also have free entrance on the 24th.

The city transforms during the week of La Mercé and each neighbourhood closes streets to put up concert stages, street performing and other activities. The weekly events are always publicised in programmes – but interestingly, the council never translates these into English – only Spanish and Catalan, which goes to show hoe much of a “local” feel you get to the various activities – Mardi gras this is not. Recent years have seen many good groups play the various stages that are dotted around the city centre, and it’s worthwhile checking the schedule as they’re all free, and you can usually take in a fair few good bands. There is a great firework display along Barceloneta Beach, too.

One of the highlights of the festival is the “correfoc” or fire run, which is a dangerous parade of fire-breathing dragons that run through the Gothic quarter. In medieval times, the devil was said to roam the streets of the Gothic quarter, and this is re-created with much enthusiasm. Certain years the rain has stopped the fire-run form going ahead, so this leaves the various groups who organise the activity with even more enthusiasm for the following year. The event is well organised, but followers/spectators are advised to take precautions – no loose clothing or scarves – basically anything that could accidentally catch fire.

There is also usually a competition of the human statues that have cemented their place along Las Ramblas over the years, and this week is a great time to see the various acts and players at their best.

However, perhaps the most striking part of the festivities is the opening. The human castles “Castellers” gather in “Place de la Mercé” and this is something you don’t want to miss – although it’s difficult to see, as the place gets very crowded. They also broadcast live on TV. These human towers involve standing on each others shoulders, and reach dizzy heights, until a child reaches the top, waves a hand, and then begins the descent – just as daring and difficult as the ascent! Recent years have seen unfortunate injuries to some of the little ones, so a helmet is now obligatory.

In such a city of icons it's easy to spend all your time visiting the world famous landmarks of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, shopping in King Street, partying in Sydney's famous Paddington and broiling on Bondi Beach. But to truly know this great city you have to drag yourself away from the glory of the harbour and pizzazz of the shopping centres and visit some quieter and less-visited spots. Here's a look at the historic suburb of Manly.

Catch the ferry from Circular Quay seven nautical miles north to the seaside suburb of Manly and visit its beach, art gallery and Oceanworld, which houses an array of local aquatic fauna including Barrier Reef fish and giant sharks.

The 30-minute ferry journey offers grand views of Sydney Harbour en route to Manly Wharf, Manley Cove's spanking new wining and dining oasis. The suburb's name was given by Captain Arthur Phillip after meeting the local Aborigines whom he considered of masculine mien.

Manly has lost some of its old cachet. In 1940 the slogan, 'Manly – 7 Miles from Sydney and 1000 miles from care' was coined by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company in 1940. It then had the lofty status of "Australia’s Premier Seaside Resort”. But it’s still got a lot to offer.

Thrusting out into the ocean, Manly offers 18 beaches, coves and inlets as well as its harbour. It's the perfect place for beach volleyball, swimming, sea-kayaking, scuba-diving, sailing and surfing.

Other than sunbathing and water sports, Manly is famous for its Oceanworld on Manly Cove Beach which offers a collection of giant sharks and stingrays which can be viewed from an underwater tunnel. If you're feeling bold and are an experienced diver, you can dive with the sharks. Or for meeker souls, there's shark feeding on certain days. There's also a reptile house for viewing snakes, crocs and other slitheries.

Next to Oceanworld on the West Esplanade, a few minutes walk from Manly Wharf, is Manly Art gallery and Museum. When it opened in 1930, it was the first metropolitan regional gallery in New South Wales.

It's a tiny place but packed with exhibits about local history and culture including old photos and newspapers and a collection of ceramics. It's a centre for the Manly community with frequent workshops, artists' talks, readings, performances and recitals. It also plays a key role in the annual Manly Arts Festival and Manly's public art program.

Manly is a great jumping off point for the Manly scenic walk which takes you through Sydney Harbour National Park. Here you walk through bush with stunning sea views to deserted beaches, bays and coves. To start the walk you need to take a bus to the Spit Bridge. The walk takes you to an old whitewashed lighthouse with ancient Aboriginal rock carvings nearby. The walkway finishes in Manly Cove near Oceanworld.

If you need sustenance, you'll find Manly offers a host of bars, cafes and restaurants and a few nightspots if you're not tired out by your scenic walk.

Shaver Lake is a California family tradition

If you're planning a family vacation, California's vacation lakes and mountain retreats are even more impressive than its theme parks. One great example is Shaver Lake.

One of our most recent discoveries is Shaver Lake, a little more than an hour's drive northeast from Fresno and an ideal spot to include in a Northern California vacation. The change in scenery during that short trip is dramatic, taking you from the flat farmlands near Fresno through wooded, rolling foothills and then up nearly 6,000 feet into the pine forests that surround this idyllic lake. Central Valley residents have long known that Shaver Lake is a great spot to experience the Sierras; now - judging from the area's real estate boom - people from all over California have started to catch on.

Shaver Lake is tucked between Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks and hints at the same natural beauty found in the parks. The difference is that Shaver remains largely undiscovered and therefore not quite as prone to seasonal traffic congestion. Shaver is still "off the beaten path" for vacationers who want the experience of visiting a small mountain village with just a couple of general stores and a handful of restaurants serving home-style grub. Only about 3,000 people live in the entire area.

All of this is exactly what we wanted as we set out on our own "cabin-in-the-woods" getaway. We contacted Vacation Rental Specialties to reserve a cabin meeting our specifications. With pictures to study on the internet, we were able to see exactly what kind of place we were renting, both inside and out. We wanted a true log cabin experience, but with modern conveniences - and that's exactly what we got.

We use the word "cabin" here a little loosely - our rental was really a complete vacation home built like a cabin. Almost everything was constructed of logs, all right, but the home's amenities are more modern than most people have in their primary residence. We learned that this particular "cabin" is owned by a Monterey family who uses it part of the time themselves and puts it into the Vacation Rental Specialties rental pool for much of the year.

Our rental, the "Whalen Log Cabin," was a million-dollar home with two bedrooms, a loft, 1.75 baths, dishwasher, cable TV, DVD and a washer and dryer. A 1,750-square-foot deck is the perfect place to barbecue or watch the sun set over the mountains. Out back cabin near Shaver Lakethere are plenty of pine trees reminding guests that, yes, this is the mountains and, in fact, the edge of the wilderness. These aren't exactly cheap vacations but when you consider the cost of premium hotel rooms nowadays, the rental fee of $225 a night plus a cleaning and booking fee is one of the best travel deals around.

Our family of three was swimming in extra space and, according to Bill Wingo, owner of Vacation Rental Specialties, many guests are bring another couple or family and stay for a week at a time. It's a new trend called "togethering" - sharing vacations with other family members or friends and thereby reducing rental costs while at the same time getting the chance to visit and experience new places and activities together.

According to Wingo, there also is a trend in vacation rentals now toward high-end properties such as the Whalen Log Cabin. It wasn't long ago, according to Wingo, that people were wanting more rustic cabins in the woods with just a few amenities but located in the wilderness. Today, guests are looking for all the extras and willing to pay extra to make their home away from home both relaxing and luxurious.

Also, guests are starting to expect the property rental firm to be more service-oriented, Wingo explained. Instead of just handing over a set of keys, property managers today also have to put on a concierge hat and do such things as make reservations for boat rentals, dinner or whatever else the guests may have planned for their stay. It used to be that guests were responsible for taking out garbage and providing bedding - nowadays, those often are among the services provided by the rental firm, although sometimes at an extra cost.

Equally important is the location of the vacation rental, and the Shaver Lake area is proving popular with active vacationers. Altogether Shaver Lake has 23 miles of shoreline and guests enjoy activities such as windsurfing, fishing, hiking, boating and winter downhill sports at a nearby ski area. The lake actually is part of a hydroelectric project owned and operated by California Edison. Shaver Lake was first constructed and filled in 1927 as part of the Big Creek Hydroelectric project. It was named for pioneer lumberman C.B. Shaver, who logged in the area during the late 1890s.

For many visitors, Shaver Lake actually is a jumping off point for treks further into the Sierra National trading post near Shaver LakeForest and two other lakes, Huntington and Edison, are nearby. Eighteen small lakes are located in the Kaiser Wilderness, just north of Huntington Lake.

We were looking to do a little hiking and to just soak up the local culture down in Shaver Lake's tiny business district. We enjoyed our steak dinner down at the Trading Post - the floor is tilted downhill in a few areas, but the big rock fireplace sets the mood perfectly.

The fireplace back at our vacation home also helped set the mood for this "cabin-in-the-woods" experience - instead of watching television like we might normally do at home, we put some games on the spacious floor in front of the crackling fire and thoroughly enjoyed a family respite from everyday life in the city.

As the most populous city in south-west England and a finalist for the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Bristol is an often-overlooked gem of a city, with a long history dating back as far as the 11th century, and a stunning harbour setting by the River Avon. This compact city is a great place for a short city-break in one of the many Bristol hotels that are in the area, or even a longer holiday, given its great location by the sea and its proximity to two capital cities – Cardiff AND London, both of which are easily accessible as day-trips.

But within Bristol itself, there is plenty to do, and at specific times of the year it’s a great place for outdoor activities such as jogging and cycling.

Odessa city is being the administrative center of Odessa region with its over 1 million inhabitants population (Odessa is the only city in Ukraine which has so many nations (200) living in it) and satellite cities of Illyichevsk and Yuzhny is an important industrial and trading complex.

The city is situated on the Black Sea north-western seashore (The Black Sea and foreign investments make Odessa the 2nd largest resort in Ukraine) on the trading routes from the Central and Northern Europe to the Close East and Asia crossing. Developed highways network, city location near the Danube, the Dniester, the Southern Bug, the Dnieper rivers, as well as large seaport of Odessa, with Odessa international airport and railway create the unique favorable conditions for loads accepting, processing, saving, and transporting and the powerful passenger flows processing.

Catherine the Great founded Odessa in 1794. In 1764 the Empress formed the territories newly acquired in the southwest other empire into a province called New Russia. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-91, Don Josef de Ribas (Spanish) stormed the fortress of Yeny-Dunai at Khadzhibei. De Ribas and his close collaborator, a Dutch engineer named Franz de Volan, recommended Khadzhibei as the site for the region's principal port. Its harbor was deep and nearly ice-free. Breakwaters, on the model of those found at Naples and Livorno could be cheaply constructed and would render the harbor safe even for large fleets. The Governor General of New Russia, Prince Platon Zubov one of Catherine's favorites gave decisive support to the latter proposal. In 1794, Catherine gave it her approval. She immediately sent money to de Ribas and de Volan to build a harbor. This new settlement was given the name Odessa.

The unique position of Odessa as a vital trade link between the West and the East, and the growth in importance of Russia's external trade through the Black Sea in the 19th century made way for the establishment of a big trade port center for the development of Odessa into an advanced European city. By its hundredth anniversary (1894), Odessa occupied the 4th place in the Russian Empire in size and economic power - after St. Petersburg, Moscow and Warsaw.

Since Odessa has got a lot of educational establishments, theaters, museums, libraries and other cultural and educational profile establishments, the city is known all over the world and is considered to be both the economical and the cultural center of Ukraine.

Many world-famous musicians, writers and artists lived and worked here, not every city has so rich a cultural biography as Odessa does. The mixture of rich architecture, warm hospitality, and beautiful nature is the secret of Odessa’s popularity, and success as one of the leading Ukrainian resorts.

Moderately continental and comparatively dry climate with a short mild winter and long hot summer (more than 290 sunny days in the year) make Odessa the largest resort on the coast of The Black Sea.

Winter is short and mild with an average temperature of around freezing point. Falling snow and temperatures below minus 5 Celsius are rare. Summer is long and hot with an average temperature of 25 Celsius. Temperatures above 35 Celsius are quite often.

Rio Cultural Centers: Flamengo Options

Thinking about renting an apartment in Flamengo? Excellent idea! Flamengo has become an increasingly sought-out neighborhood in Rio for several reasons, including its art deco architecture buildings, famous bars like Belmonte and ultimately its cultural centers and museums. Until the 1950s, Flamengo and Catete were the principal residential zones of Rio's wealthier middle class and that may be the reason why some of many embassies (today consulates) were established here.

Nowadays, Flamengo is a vibrant middle-class residential neighborhood, with much charm and culture to be had. In this article we will describe some of the cultural centers and museums established in the Flamengo district including the Modern Art Museum, Oi Futuro Cultural Center, and the Catete Palace. The best thing is that most of these marvels are free.

Our first stop is the city ´s Modern Art Museum. It has a privileged location on Flamengo Park alongside Guanabara Bay, with the landscaping designs of Burle Marx. The Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro started its construction in 1954, and is perhaps architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy´s most striking design: rows of angled concrete ribs support and enclose the gallery space. Inaugurated in 1958, the Modern Art Museum has a very unusual history; after a tragic fire in 1978 burned most of its collection, and damaged the structure of the building, a tremendous reconstruction effort put the museum back on its feet, and today the permanent collection has over 2,000 pieces by Brazilian and international artists. A major contribution was made by art patron Gilberto Chateubriand, with a private collection of 4,000 pieces. It is also under the care of MAM, and can be seen in the permanent exhibition. An interesting program of art shows and exhibitions keep the museum as an excellent attraction throughout the year. An impressive collection of the works of Picasso, Max Ernst, Rodin, Brancusi and other artists from Brazil and elsewhere is housed in this concrete and glass building in Flamengo Park.

Another major attraction of the Museum of Modern Art is the film collection ("Cinemateca do MAM"), one of the best in Latin America, with over 12,000 titles including some rarities. There are sessions and festivals open for the general public, with Brazilian and foreign cult movies that are not normally shown on the commercial circuit. Our next Cultural Center for Flamengo is OI FUTURO, located at Rua Dois de Dezembro, 66. The Center is maintained and supported by major telecom player in Brazil: OI and has been receiving since its founding grants from several foundations to enhance its cultural assets and infrastructure. OI FUTURO is housed in a building that was built in 1918 and has just been remodeled, resulting in a gain of over two thousand square meters of internal space. The building's façade was preserved. There are four floors, interposed among the building's eight levels, connected by glass stairways and elevators. Each floor presents different exhibits throughout the month. OI FUTURO's varied program includes activities related to music, videos and plastic arts. Visitors will also find an up-to-date library with an abundance of research material: magazines, newspapers and on-line computers as well as exhibition rooms. A full multi-use theater with 180 seats presents regular plays every week, at popular prices. A very charming Wi-Fi connected bistro is located at the upper floor of the Cultural Center, which leads to the terrace of the building. From the terrace, you can even see part of the Flamengo beach and Guanabara Bay. Our last stop is the Catete Palace. The Catete Palace - seat of Brazil's Republican Government from 1897 to 1960 and scene of activities of eighteen Presidents - has seen some of the most important events in Brazil's political life, including the Declaration of Brazil's entry into World Wars I and II and the suicide of President Getúlio Vargas in 1954. Transformed into a museum when Brasília became the nation's capital in 1960, and closed for restoration from 1983 through 1989, the Republic Museum reopened with a broad-ranging cultural program that includes exhibitions, concerts, plays, movies, videos, boutiques, restaurants and a book-store.

The gardens of the Museum acquired new lighting, with the replacement of 71 forged iron posts - in the eclectic style - for other posts with contemporaneous designs made of steel. Today, on the ground floor, the Entrance Hall and the Ministerial Room still retain the solemn atmosphere of capital meetings and decisions regarding the nation's destiny. Two long-standing exhibits present historical information about the first occupant of the Palace and his descendents and about the inauguration of the Republic Museum. The remaining rooms hold temporary exhibits that represent varied aspects of Republican Brazil.

On the second floor, known as the "noble floor", luxury and thematic diversity stand out. The Chapel room and the Blue, Noble, Pompeian, Venetian, Moorish and Banquette rooms show off their vintage Brazilian and French furniture, paintings from artists such as Baptista da Costa, Gustavo dall'Ara, Décio Vilares, Rodolfo Amoedo, Henrique Bernardelli, besides sculptures, chandeliers and porcelain from the 19th and 20th Centuries. The third floor highlights the reconstruction of President Getúlio Vargas' room. The remaining rooms are devoted to the display of objects, text documents and photographs from the Republic Museum's own collection. The complex also hosts one of my favorite movie theaters in town. The theater is especially known for its art movies and is named "Cinema Museu da República". You can check the theater's schedule in any newspaper in town.

Island Airline Reports Record Growth

Many airlines, especially low-cost airlines, are accustomed to record sales during the peak travel months of summer.

Air Malta, celebrating its 34th anniversary this year, had a record breaking winter season with more than 500,000 passengers originating from its homebase of Malta's Luqa Airport.

The winter months, November 2007 through March 2008, showed a 15 percent increase over the 2006 winter season.

Malta's charter traffic saw a 21 percent increase over last year's winter season. The market in which the airline reported the largest increase in passengers was Italy with 41 percent. Germany came in a close second at 32 percent with France at 25 percent and the U.K. by 6 percent.

Chief Officer Commercial Brock Friesen said the airline registered double-digit growth every month during the winter season.

Dr. Friesen said Air Malta's success can be attributed to several factors.

Existing code-share agreements with other airlines, including Lufthansa and Air One, expand Air Malta's network, allowing travellers daily access via European hubs.

In its entirety, the network of airlines offers access to more than 180 destinations worldwide. The airline had also recently implemented ticket sales on the internet as part of an effort to increase sales during the winter months.

'This record growth will result into more destinations and frequencies to main European gateways, giving the Maltese public better accessibility worldwide', Dr. Friesen said.

He also told reporters, 'These figures did not materialize by chance or other external market factors, including the start of operations of various low-cost airlines, but are the result of number of commercial initiatives which the airline has taken in recent years. We have organized our Commercial Division and outstation office network, enhanced our distribution tools, invested heavily in revenue management systems and reporting tools, setup an e-business unit and an international call center, and launched a new portal and booking engine amongst others.

These initiatives were backed up by aggressive marketing communications campaigns across Europe especially in our core markets of the U.K., Germany, Italy and France. We have focused on the short break market segment and the 'extension' of our traditional summer season to include our off-peak months.'

April through October is considered peak flight season. Air Malta's marketing and product general manager, Brian Bartolo, announced that the airline will offer 200 flights per week to 40 scheduled destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.

They have also added Leipzig and Innsbruck to the list of available destinations. In addition to the introduction of new available destinations, the airline will be increasing capacity and the frequency of flights to Berlin, Catania, London, Gatwick, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Rome.

All good news for tourists in those destinations who want flights to Malta

The success of low-cost airlines proves that current currency exchange rates have not had the negative impact on international travel that was anticipated.

Passengers are simply being more mindful of prices that fit their travel plans and budgets.

In fact, business for most of the low-cost airlines that make frequent flights to and from Malta as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands, has seen a dramatic increase.

Airlines have already promised more frequent flights to and from favorite travel destinations for the 2008 summer travel season. Increased flights at reduced prices and the availability of packaged travel deals are sure to be big hits with tourists for summer 2008.

Antequera golf course is located inside the “Antequera Golf” residential estate. It is about 650 metres above sea level and is surrounded by the spectacular mountains of the TORCAL on the Costa del Sol.

The fairways are flanked by olive trees more than 200 years old and special emphasis has been placed on conserving the pre-existing flora and fauna.

It is an 18 hole course with a par of 72 and is more that 6,050 metres in length. It has 10 lakes in total, built to channel the water from the melting snows of the mountains, and to store it and use it in the hot summer months.

The level of difficulty of the outward nine holes and the back nine holes was designed in such a way as to compensate each other in match play games.

Flamingos Golf can be found in what can only be described as one of the most beautiful enclaves of the Costa del Sol Golf. From each of the 18 holes you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, Africa and Gibraltar while experiencing all the peace and tranquillity you desire from a golf course.

Designed by the famous Spanish Ryder cup player Antonio Garrido, the course was first opened in 2001. It offers an exciting and varied design with ample but tiered greens along with undulating fairways that will impress even the most discerning golfer. A special feature is the "Arroyo del Taraje" stream that passes through the course and ends in a lake that is a natural border for the course at the beginning of holes one and ten. What you will notice is that every detail has been considered and cypress, oranges, olives, pines, carobs and chestnuts are the types of tree that give each hole its own identity.

The course is very enjoyable with a good mixture of both long and short holes. It is demanding for even the most experienced golfer, particularly the front nine holes. Just remember the views if you are not playing well - they are well worth the visit! The par 4 tenth is the most challenging hole where water plays its part. A good tee shot is required to set up the chance of playing over the water to reach the huge but undulating green.

There are also two artificial lakes on the fifteenth and the right hand side of the seventeenth that make this even more interesting. Another feature is that all the bunkers are filled with ground marble.

Its True! Bournemouth "Gaza Strip" DOES exist - at least thats what the locals in the suburb of Charminster call it ...

Bournemouth - An Introduction

"Sunny Bournemouth" is just 100 miles away from London, on the south coast of England - it is nearly opposite the Isle of Wight, and famous for its music festival and many yacht regattas.

The town is home to over 200,000 people, which swells by many thousands at weekends and during the Summer months - it is a well known resort with many hotels, restaurants, and leisure activities on-hand.

At one point in Bournemouths history there were more hotel bedrooms within its boundaries than any other city in Europe outside of London, with approximately 30,000 beds.

The town also benefits by being a premier English language teaching centre, with many schools attracting students from all over the world to learn English.

Where to Go - What to Do

Bournemouth is in the county of Dorset and is an ideal tourist base. Tourists benefit from a nine mile Sandy Beach, and it is well-placed for visits to Salisbury, Stonehenge, Winchester, the New Forest and Dorchester (the famous market town residing in whats known as " Hardy Country"). The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is only 45 minutes away, with over 90 miles of stunning coastline containing fossils dating back 180 million years recording Earths history.

The weather is so clement in Bournemouth that Palm trees flourish year round. Its a very green town, with many parks and an abundance of fine Championship golf courses. It also benefits from its growing international airport, which already services many European countries, with direct flights to major cities and resorts in the Mediterranean.

Nearby is the Sandbanks Penisula, which has some of the most expensive homes in the world - the houses have beautiful views of the Purbeck Hills and across one of the worlds largest and most stunning natural harbours anywhere - it provides the perfect environment for sailing and watersports. The mudflats and salt marshes are an ecological paradise for roosting birds.

There are three theatres - The Pavilion, The Pier Theatre and the Bournemouth International Centre. We also have multiplex Cinemas, the Russell Coates Museum, an oceanarium. two piers, beautiful gardens and a pedestrianised shopping area running from the east to the west of the town joining at the the Town Centre called The Square, which usually has a number of attractions throughout the year culminating in the German Christmas Market. The town also boasts its own large international conference and exhibition Centre called the B.I.C. At certain times of the year the main leisure centre has an ice rink installed. During the Summer months there is a free firework display near Bournemouth Pier on Friday Nights.

Bournemouth is also one of the hottest spots in Europe for young people going clubbing. It is also a firm favourite for stag and hen parties.

Bournemouth was recently voted the "Happiest Place to Live in the United Kingdom" - it received a vote of over 82% to take first place.

The " Gaza Strip "

Let me reveal all about the "Strip". I have already mentioned the great influx of language students visiting our town - they used to come Spring to Autumn, but nowadays the schools are very busy all year round, such is the demand for English as a language worldwide. The consequence is that Bournemouth has become one of the most truly cosmopolitan towns in the United Kingdom.

To answer the needs of these new temporary residents, the main street in Charminster has burgeoned with bars, restaurants, cafes and shops selling exotic ethnic foods. Most of the owners of these outlets tend to be from the Middle East, with Italians, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish people supplementing their numbers. Korean,Japanese,Chinese and Asian foodshops are on the increase. It has made the main street a vibrant and colourful place to eat, drink and shop.

The bars and restaurants tend to serve food and drink all day long - you wont go hungry on the Gaza Strip.

There has, I have noticed, been a change in the body language and traditional greetings of the English, due to the influence of the traders and the students - many more men kiss and hug each other in the street quite readily! I have also noticed more back-slapping and handshaking than would have been seen previously.

All in all, the Gaza has benefitted the community as a whole. Also, due to the Smoking ban in shops and bars, there are more people lining the street - they have adopted an almost bazaar-type comradeship. If you take a ride along the Gaza, youll notice the number of people calling out to each other with jokes and comments across the street, previously unknown in conservative England.

Depending which end of the strip you start from, the boundaries of the "Gaza" are as follows: starting from the north, you have Sinbads Restaurant at the traffic lights, commonly known as "Kebab Juction and the Corner of the Gaza" (this was a genuine instruction to a taxi driver by a passenger, and he was taken straight there), you reach the end of the strip in the south at Tesco Express. In-between these junctions, you can feast on just about any mouthwatering food you desire.

Restaurants & Bars

Listed below are but a few of the venues on the "Strip". I have also included the nationalities of the owners, who have spotted the opportunity to provide services to an extended community. They are to be congratulated for their foresight and capital investment in turning what was a mediocre suburban shopping street into a vibrant experience for all to enjoy.

Serves mainly continental food and a varied selection of wines, open until late, very popular in the evenings, gets very busy, mainly due to the efforts of Miguel, Marco, Einstein ( Ali ) Guzel and Ishmael the Boss -all great lads who always have a smile and a welcome for you... not to mention their wicked cocktails.

The Nippon Inn

Japanese / English Owner

This little restaurant and bar is run by Steve and his Japanese wife; they are right next door to Sebis, and serve some amazing versions of Japanese food resembling Spanish Tapas... nice people.

Salsa

Syrian Owner

This small, friendly bar restaurant has a reputation for Italian / Spanish food with a fair smattering of Middle Eastern meals. It benefits from having a very sunny patio, where you can while away the time and enjoy eating garlic olives, a slice of pizza and a glass or two of wine whilst watching the antics of the people parading up and down the Gaza. Tariq is mine host and will always give you the time of day.

Serves mainly Italian food and wines together with that lovely Peroni beer, open until late, very popular in the evenings, gets very busy - they have great Jazz nights and always do their best to provide lively entertainment.

A great Italian restaurant operated by the lovely Nikki and Nico the owners, upmarket food and drink for the discerning, just wish they opened at lunchtime again.

San Lorenzos

Certainly the most famous Italian restaurant on the strip, very friendly, and ably run by Ann and Lorenzo for many years. This restaurant has a very long association with the soccer fraternity, having hosted many dinners for professional footballers when they have come to compete in the town.

The Sad Part

I have a sad observation to make, there is only One pub on the Gaza. Its called the Richmond Arms, and what a state the Brewery has let it get into. It has one of the biggest Gardens of any pub locally, and borders a least 100 feet of the "Strip", separated only by dingy railings. This once happy and vibrant community pub is now in a disgraceful state of decor. The opportunity to be a showcase on this thriving street, and to attract back a bountiful customer base,is being ignored. Given the effort our Middle Eastern friends have put in (and quality, too ), the brewery should be ashamed.

A Question ?

Why do the people of Spain enjoy the freedom of choice when it comes to where you can and cannot smoke in a Bar / Restaurant environment.

I am led to understand that if premises are under a certain square meterage say 100 or that said premise only has a capacity for upto 100 people then they can apply for and are granted a license which they display on their front door advising the public that they make smoke within...how sensible.

The question is of course .....can it be done in the United Kingdom.

A Good Part

For the first time this year, an event known as the Bournemouth Sevens will be staged at the sports facilites near the Airport, 31st May and 1st June 2008. I have copied some information below should you be interested.

A rich history has helped define the Balearic Islands we know today. The official spoken languages are Spanish and Catalan, though many islanders are multi-lingual and speak English, French and German as well.

Mallorca and Menorca are very popular tourist destinations, especially among U.K. tourism markets.

Tourism to the islands began in the early 1950s with doctors prescribing weeks or months of tropical warmth to ease the discomfort of their patients. The warmth and relaxation the islands offered gave ease to arthritis sufferers as well as those who suffered from stress-related illnesses.

The History of Ciutadella

Ciutadella, former capital city of Menorca, has been known by many names throughout history.

It was originally founded by the Carthaginians in the early 4th century. For several centuries it was under the control of the Moors and often referred to as Madina al Jazira and Madina al Manurqa.

The reconquista or reconquest was a period of growth for all of the Iberian Peninsula. During this 750-year period and under the rule of Alfonso II, Ciutadella became part of the Crown of Aragon. It became a very important center for trade during the Middle Ages.

On July 9, 1558, a Turkish Armada of 140 ships and 15,000 soldiers invaded the town. Defended only by a few hundred men, the eight-day siege saw the entire town demolished. More than 3,000 surviving inhabitants were sold into slavery in the slave markets of Istanbul, also known as Constantinople, Turkey.

Many centuries of varying ownership and dramatic battles have left their mark on Ciutadella. Many civil and religious buildings were built following an Italian style in Ciutadella during the 17th century.

Prior to the 17th century, the Cathedral of Menorca was built on the foundation of an older mosque in 1287. By 1722, Menorca had come under British rule and Mahon was named her capital city.

The former capital still holds much of its medieval charm. No visit to Menorca would be complete without a tour of Ciutadella's old town. The current town hall was the former palace of the Arab governor. It also served as the Aragonese and governor's palace before the capital city was moved to Mahon.

Almenara Golf is one of the newest golf complexes on the Costa del Sol Golf boasting 27 holes that are always in immaculate condition.

Almenara Golf was originally designed by Dave Thomas and the first eighteen holes were opened in 1998 and the latest nine added in 2001. The fairways run through cork oaks and wild pines accompanied by several meandering streams and natural lakes. The setting is one of the finest on the Costa del Sol Golf.

The course itself, the three nines are called Los Pinos, Los Alcornoques and Los Lagos. A mixture of the three make up course A (Los Pinos and Los Alcornoques), course B (Los Alcornoques and Los Lagos) and Course C (Los Lagos and Los Pinos) and these are rotated to ensure they are all kept in such immaculate condition and a pleasure to play. Each course is different with a mixture of undulating fairways, deep bunkers and several water hazards making this a challenge for even the most accomplished golfer.

There are excellent facilities at Almenara Golf with a superb practice area located nearby consisting of 27 driving bays which is the envy of many clubs. In this practice area there are three full-length holes to enjoy, chipping and putting greens as well practice bunkers. Are alternative fuels on the road to a solution?

There are many innovative solutions to the current questions concerning high gasoline prices and greenhouse emissions. Crops grown especially for fuel. Ethanol made from corn has no harmful emissions it is made from a reusable resource, the US government is pushing for 80% bio-fuel mixed with 20% gasoline, they can better than that! Bio-fuels produced from crops such as soybean and corn are at an effective alternative to gasoline both being a renewable resource that helps the farmers have a constant demand for their crops all the better for a continuous cash flow. However, if all the corn currently grown in the US was used to produce ethanol it would only meet only around 12% of the current demand for fuel, more and more land is being bought up for the production of ethanol, and it's largely dependent upon the weather, a yield of around 18 gallons of oil from corn can be produced per year per acre, more can be possible with genetic alterations, the growing process also requires fertilizes, pesticides and heavy machinery to harvest, effectively adding to soil contamination. It is also estimated the process uses as much energy to produce and transport as regular oil. There are also concerns that the farmland required for producing ethanol from crops will take up valuable space previously used for food crops, as recently food crops have suffered from extreme weather conditions and natural disasters pushing food prices higher, is then using this land, to produce ethanol feasible or even ethical?

Other alternatives being looked at are probably more efficient but less appealing to some, include reusing vegetable oil, a converter with filter, which can be placed in any diesel engine to allow it to take 100% used vegetable oil such as that from restaurants, it is refined slightly after being collected, and then sold at less than half the price of regular gasoline, higher end cars such as Saab and Mercedes are using this technology.

Water powered cars are also a reality by splitting the hydrogen oxygen (H2O) combo, that comprises water, and using the energy that is produced when they are put back together, these cells can be effectively be installed into cars reliant on petroleum, tailpipe emissions? Water.

Bio-gas energy sources have come up with a process of using organic wastes solids or liquids, do you remember in the movie back to the future, when the professor came back from the future at the end of the movie he stuffed garbage into the fuel tank and converting it into a usable gas product. Aloha Golf is situated in the heart of the Costa del Sol on the Nueva Andalucia Urbanisation which is 8km west of Marbella and 3km inland from Puerto Banus.

Designed by Javier Arana, one of Spain's most famous golf course architects, this 18 hole, par 72 course has narrow fairways lined by trees and difficult greens which challenge players of all levels.

The estimated shortage of 10,000 workers across the ACT could double over the next three years when large numbers of baby boomers retire.

Public service job cutbacks in Tuesday week's Federal budget, tipped to cost Canberra up to 3000 positions, is likely to have little impact on the capital's worsening skills drought.

Today, The Canberra Times begins a three-part series on the extent of the ACT skills drought, which is worse here than anywhere else in Australia, and what could be done to fix it.

ACT Chamber of Commerce chief executive Chris Peters said business growth in the territory had been stalled for 18 months due to insufficient workers.

"About two years ago staff shortages were No13 on businesses lists of concerns. It's been No1 for about 18 months, so it is the major impediment to business growth."

The ACT Skills Commission and the chamber's research shows the ACT will continue to be hardest hit of all Australian states and territories from a shortage of skilled and unskilled workers.

Access Economics research shows the ACT's population is biased towards the 45 to 59 age group.

The demographics report compiled for the Skills Commission says the retirement timing of this age group and especially those aged 50 to 54 will have an even greater impact on the ACT workforce than it will nationally.

Access Economics expects increasing labour force participation rates up to 2010, with a reversal of that trend from 2010 to 2015 and a sharp reduction in participation after then because the main part of the baby boom generation will have reached the age of 65.

ACT Skills Commission chairman Derek Volker warns that today's delays will become tomorrow's disaster when too few people are available to look after elderly folk.

"It is not a skills problem, it's more a people problem and if we don't do something about it, it could turn into a crisis not too far down the track."

Home Help Service ACT, a not-for-profit organisation that provides in-home support to the elderly and frail aged, could place 20 people immediately in its stretched ranks of carers.

Canberra employers scouring the country and overseas for employees are competing with the remainder of the western world which is suffering a skills drought.

Mr Peters said three factors contributed to the territory's exceptional worker shortage:

Having both the lowest unemployment (2.4 per cent) and highest participation rates in Australia, which meant there weren't too many stay-at-home mothers, or unemployed, to fill job vacancies; The ACT and Adelaide had Australia's two fastest aging populations; and Older public servants in a former superannuation scheme had to retire before 55 to maximise their superannuation benefits.

"Canberra has the highest percentage of public servants than anywhere in Australia and they retire a decade earlier than the rest of Australia." Mr Peters said Federal budget cuts in two weeks were expected to cause a net loss of 1000 people from the Commonwealth Public Service.

At best those leaving would have wide-ranging expertise.

"It depends on what the mix is I expect the mix will be fairly broad, which would be widely welcomed by the business community, but all of those won't solve our problem."

Shortages are in all sectors, from engineering, health, trades, services and construction.

Multinational construction company Bovis Lend Lease said employers were competing with unprecedented building in the booming Middle East countries, and project directors could command salaries of up to $300,000.

Hays senior regional director for Canberra Jane Donnelly said financial controllers and managers on salaries of up to $100,000 and $130,000 were in demand following the meltdown of global financial markets last year.

"Within the banking sector they are far more aware of the risk associated with certain products, they are seeking people with extensive risk analyst-type skills."

Mr Peters said the shortage meant people were finding the service in places like restaurants, hairdressing salons and workshops slower. "If you have an accident driving home tonight in your car, typically your car will sit on the panel beaters shop floor for two weeks until they can get to it. That's now. In three years time that [timeframe] will double."

The Glasshouse Theatre will be a part of the Glasshouse Arts, Conference, and Entertainment Centre. Constructed to be a dual-purpose building, the Glasshouse will contain not only the 606-seat theatre and concert hall, but also studio and rehearsal space, a three level regional gallery, heritage displays from the 1820s era, conference areas, meeting rooms, and a café/bar combination. There has been some talk of rescheduling the performances to take place in other venues so that the entertainment factor is not totally lost. Many of the scheduled performances at the Glasshouse had sold out very quickly, 36 hours after they were advertised, so there is no doubt that another venue could do the same with a popular production. Those who had already purchased show and season tickets were contacted regarding a refund, credit, and any revised dates for the show they wanted to attend.

When the Glasshouse is finally completed, it is going to be a showplace indeed. The theatre section is being specifically designed in order to insure the best quality experience possible for the patrons. The lighting and acoustics are technically superior so as to be certain that everyone present can both see and hear what is happening on stage. Even the seating will be designed so that it is tiered.

This way, no one will have their view blocked by someone else’s shoulders and head. Full disability and wheelchair access features will be in place for the disabled. Climate control settings will make sure that the venue is at a comfortable temperature, depending on the outside weather.

Summer Holidays 2008 Costing More

This year has seen the cost a typical family holiday as well as weekend breaks rise much faster than inflation, and many tourists have noticed the difference in the same 2007 holiday package compared to this year's price.

To blame are higher oil prices, and with a large part of a holiday often being a flight oil rising to over US $100 a barrel in early January was what sparked the prediction - if the analysts had known it would be over US $130 a barrel of oil by May their predictions might have been much starker.

In addition many governments are putting up the taxes on flights that they have started levying in recent years, and with the environment such a hot issue they know they can justify it by claiming it's to reduce carbon emissions.

But some in the travel industry claim not all the price rises being seen in 2008 are a result of higher oil prices, but mergers of big holiday companies who have subsequently cut the number of holidays available, and reducing supply, and if demand is as high as it was last year it will mean the same amount of people chasing fewer holidays, allowing the travel companies to increase the prices.

Those areas likely to feel the price hikes most are the most popular holiday areas, which include the Canary islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote, the Balearic islands of Majorca and Menorca, and Malta which has just begun to regain popularity after years of a declining market.

Tenerife and Lanzarote are both popular for winter sunshine holidays as well as the summer, and their winter tourist trade didn't excperience price rises earlier this year, which will give them a boost compared to the rest of Spain for 2008 overall should prices rise further for this summer as some are predicting.

Tenerife is known for its beautiful climate, which attracts nearly three and a half millions tourists a year to its scenic 2,034 square kilometers.

Most of Tenerife's tourism comes from the United Kingdom, followed by Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Italy and France, among many others.

The island is home to many beautiful resorts, including the Playas de las Americas and Los Cristianos. In fact, recent legislation was passed to ensure that any future resort construction must either be of five-star status or offer resort luxuries like golf courses or banquet facilities.

Another of Tenerife's natural tourist attractions are the Cliffs of the Giants.

These astounding rock walls drop from heights of 500-800 feet almost straight down into the sea. Tourists can soak in the sights from one of the restaurants and other viewpoints located across the small bay in the resort town of Los Gigantes. They may opt for an up-close and personal look at the massive rock faces by taking a tour boat across the bay.

Lanzarote is full-time home to more than 100,000 people and has its own international airport with airlines offering direct cheap Lanzarote flights

The destinations which are more likely to suffer from 2008 holiday price rises are those where the vast majority of tourists visit during the summer, and these include Majorca and her smaller sister island of Menorca.

Majorca has been a major summer holiday destination for several years among Europeans. Majorca attracts tourists looking for a traditional beach holiday, but beyond that the island has dramatic mountains, hidden coves and various historical archeological sites which adds to her appeal for many others.

But if bookings are slow for last minute holidays, it is likely that the summer months will see price cuts across a range of holidays, and with more and more holidays being booked on-line the travel companies can adjust prices within minutes to reflect demand, allowing those consumers who can pick and choose their week or two off at short notice the ability to circumvent any overall price rises during the year ahead.

The message from consumer groups is to search the internet and compare deals - big savings can be made with a little time and effort while doing some research at major holiday company sites.

Strahan- Raw Beauty on the Tassy West Coast

The World Heritage area that covers some 20 per cent of Tasmania is at it's most wild and beautiful on the island's West Coast. Here the thundering waves of the Southern Ocean and the uninhabited rocky shores meet each other head on, as unpredictable as the rapidly changing weather of the region. As it is largely uninhabited, a journey down the West Coast is like a trip through an age-old landscape, through ancient rainforest and past steep sided gorges. Just one town exists on this coastline, a historical village called Strahan. Strahan is seen as holding the keys to the World Heritage Area, and a visit here will unlock for you sights, sounds and experiences you would never have thought existed!

Three hours drive from Devonport (where the 'Spirit of Tasmania' docks), and four and a half hours from Hobart, Strahan is in an isolated position on the northern edge of the Macquaire Harbour. This is a large shallow inlet that the Gordon River and the King River empty into, and all three are the basis for much recreational activity in Strahan. On a still day the waters of the harbour create a mirror image, and boat cruises down its 50 kilometre length are a pleasant way to pass an afternoon. These will take you past the salmon farms, where the still waters are churned into a froth by 60 000 kilograms of Tasmanian Salmon!

Strahan has a rich history- it was initially a base for businessmen seeking the Huon Pine that proliferates in the region. Just off shore on Sarah Island a penal colony was established, and it gained the reputation as the worst colony in the country. Convicts would have to row to shore through the notoriously dangerous entrance to the harbour known as Hells Gate, and then harvest the Huon Pine before rowing back. Its convict past and its port heritage gives the town a sense of character and atmosphere that most others just do not have, and a walk down the main street, the Esplanade, is likely to provide interesting insights into Strahan's history.

The Esplanade is also lined with numerous gift shops, and many of the products in these are crafted from Huon Pine harvested from the region. This wood is in high demand because it creates its own protective oil that makes it very durable, so you anything you buy here is likely to become a family heirloom! A tour of Morrisons Huon Pine Mill will teach you more about the product, and also about its importance to the area. The mill is located next to the visitors centre in Strahan, and is renowned for being one of the few of its kind to still cut with a reciprocating saw mill.

The Huon forests themselves are simply beauiful, and well worth a drive through in your rental car. A more thrilling way of seeing them however is to jump on the West Coast Wilderness Railway, a steam-operated train that runs between Strahan and Queenstown, which is inland. This 35 kilometre guided tour takes you along a railway that is over 100 years old, through rainforests that are over 2000 years old and over a mountain range that is, well, as old as the hills! Its a journey past some amazing sights and a journey into the history of the area too.

Another popular way of seeing the sights, this time from a water based vantage point, is to take a river cruise up the mighty Gordon River. Its dense banks are home to copious amounts of bird and wild life, and the evening times are a particularly good time to see these. The number of things to do at the arcades and game rooms are almost endless. Originating from the Dabang River, a tributary of the Beipan River in the Pearl River system, the Huangguoshu (Yellow-fruit Tree) Waterfall is 81 meters wide, has a head fall of 77.8 meters, and an average flow of 9.12 cubic meters per second. From the top of the fault cliff, the river water flies through the air, plunging with earth-shaking power into the Xiniu(Rhinoceros)Pond. A 134-meter-long water curtain cave lies secreted behind the main fall. The cave has six "windows," five "sitting rooms" and three springs and from within you look through the "windows" at the rushing waterfall on the other side. It is a real wonder but in recent years. this wonder Can be seen less and less.

The area of the Huangguoshu Waterfall is of karst topography and water leakage is common, making it very difficult to maintain a big flow. For half of every year the waterfall relies on natural rainfall, but for the other half supply is dependent on a reservoir upstream. During the dry season, the waterfall reservoir discharges water in the daytime but not at night. Even so, this is not a complete solution and now a larger upstream reservoir is being constructed.

Russian River canoe trip ideal for families

The lazy days of summer are straight-ahead and that means it's prime season for one of Sonoma County's favorite family adventures - a Huck Finn type of getaway that is neither expensive nor difficult to get to. For decades people of all ages have made their annual pilgrimage to the Russian River to get a river-level view of some of the best scenery and wildlife California has to offer.

The Russian River flows through such famous Wine Country destinations as Geyserville and Healdsburg before it makes its way out to the sea through gentle hills covered with thick redwood forests and teaming with rare birds and other wildlife. A local company called Burke's Canoe Trips provides self-guided trips on a 10-mile stretch of the Russian River between Forestville and Guerneville.

The Russian River, in this case, is not exactly the "rushin'" river. If you're looking for a lot of fast water and river rapids, there are other California rivers that will fill that bill, but not this one. In fact, the water here is so tame that it's really not all that good for inner-tubing because in some parts you can't keep enough forward motion without a lot of paddling. For that reason, canoes and kayaks -- which seem to glide over the water with little effort -- are ideal.

It's not that you won't get a few thrills. As the people from Burkes' Canoes told us, there is just enough fast water to make things interesting. There are a few points in the river where channels of current can carry you into tree branches along the shore, or get your canoe turned around in a whirlpool if you don't guide your canoe to the right area. But the good news is that, even if you flip, the water's relatively warm, not very deep and you'll be carried forward to a calm area in literally just seconds.

We opted for a canoe on our trip down the river and were advised to keep all of our cameras or anything that could be water-damaged in a safe water-tight plastic bag. We also had been told to wear our swim suits, and were required to wear lightweight life-preservers. Looking at the calm water near the launch area, it almost seemed silly to worry about flipping over and we were wondering why there was so much emphasis on preparing to get wet.

We put a cooler full of drinks and sanwiches in our canoe and set off somewhat tentatively on our journey. Canoes are inherently unstable - at least if you haven't been around them for awhile - and it took us a few minutes to get comfortable with our balance and to get some confidence we could maneuver properly. But alas, our Boy Scout training soon kicked in just fine even though it had been decades - and probably a 20 percent weight gain -- since we had last put paddle to water.

Within about two minutes we faced our first challenge - avoiding a fairly fast river current pushing everything toward the wooded right shore. We aimed our canoe to the left bank, paddled quickly and managed to coordinate our front and rear paddles just enough to avoid the hazard. It wasn't a perfect approach, but it was a confidence builder. We looked forward to honing our paddling skills as we faced new challenges further down the river.

Soon we were into a calm stretch of water, barely moving but only requiring a gentle paddle to keep making good forward progress. This was when we really started to take in the natural beauty of the river - the thick forests of giant trees and the continuous ballet performed by the birds of the Russian River such as the Great Blue Heron and osprey. Along the way we would see turtles and deer as well. We also enjoyed paddling by the charming vacation cabins that are perched above the river in many strategic locations along this stretch of the Russian. Spectacular bridges span the river at various points although most of this float was away from the highway, making it feel even more remote than it actually is.

We spent the next four hours or so alternating between negotiating some of the stronger currents - or what you might call very small rapids -- and quietly paddling on a beautiful blue-sky spring day. We stopped only for a few minutes to have a sandwich on a spectacular sandy beach - although we're told most people linger at these beaches to swim, sunbathe and just hang out with their fellow travelers for hours on end.

After mastering maybe a dozen fast-current bottlenecks and with less than a few hundred yards to go to our finish, we were feeling supremely confident that we had regained the canoeing prowess of our youth. And then the unthinkable happened: we flipped. We had run aground in some shallow water and momentarily forgot that you don't dislodge a canoe by shifting your weight. Yes, we did get a little wet, but we weren't really cold on this bright sunny day and we were able to retrieve our belongings in short order.

Our pride was wounded. But we did feel better later when the Burke's Canoe people told us that fully one half of their customers flip at some point along this seemingly calm and idyllic stretch of river.

Nearby accommodations

Back in our car, we now drove the 10 miles back down to Guerneville where we would spend the night. With parks and trails and redwood scenery all just minutes from downtown, Guerneville is a popular destination for outdoors enthusiasts as well as those who love the charm of colorful small towns. Guerneville has a quiet Main Street - much busier on weekends - that offers a number of crafts shops and hometown restaurants. We enjoyed taking a couple of drives outside of town to places like Armstrong Woods with its trails through deep redwood forests. Many visitors drive just a few miles down to Jenner where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean.

We spent the night at the West Sonoma Inn and Spa, a stylish group of buildings at the edge of Guerneville where the resort takes advantage of the natural redwood scenery and nearby vineyard views. The innkeepers here have gone the extra mile in providing a lot of extras for guests that often are not found in small-town lodging facilities - plush beds, fireplaces, granite counter tops, wet bars, private decks and mini-kitchens. Our unit was unusually spacious and, because of a more spread-out configuration, each unit seemed quite private and very quiet. Grounds were richly landscaped and maintained.

A light European breakfast is offered at the West Sonoma Coast Inn that includes gourmet organic coffee, juice, fresh fruit and pastries. Prices at the inn start at less than $100 which, today, is a bargain in a highly desirable tourist area. That's especially true when you realize that the inn is considered by many to among the best and most luxurious lodging options in Guerneville.

This shows that at that time sericulture had become part of the daily life.

Leeds also has the impressive Kirkstall Abbey, which is located in the western outskirts of the city. This attractive Abbey is widely regarded as one of the most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian abbey in Britain. Kirkstall Abbey was started in 1152 and took over seventy-five years to build. Artists such as JMW Turner have painted the historic ruins and the Abbey is now a Grade 1 listed building. In the summer, visitors flock to see open-air concerts and plays in the stunning grounds of the Abbey.

At only 30 km from Verona, the lake of Garda is the largest lakes of entire Italy, with its 370 km² of amplitude. Situated on the banks of the Arno River, just below the foothills of the Apennines is the city of Florence. The city is the capital of the Tuscany region of Italy and is considered one of the most elegant cities in the world, both rich in art and cosmopolitan style.

During the hot summer months thousands of tourists choose to flock to the city for these very reasons, which can make it somewhat overwhelming and even unpleasant for those wishing to take the city in at their own pace. For the more serious tourist or art lover, Florence is best experienced during the quieter and cooler months of spring or autumn.

At the heart of Florence lie the bustling piazzas (open city squares) of de Duomo and Della Signoria. Dominating de Duomo is Florence’s cathedral, the Duomo, which is best viewed from Brunelleshci’s 15th century cupola.

Secondly is piazza Della Signoria, which, with a copy of Michelangelo’s David and also Donatello’s Marzocco is easily the city’s showpiece piazza. Not far from here you will find the Uffizi Gallery, which not only is one of the oldest gallery’s in the world, but is also home to world’s best collection of Renaissance art.

Venturing south of the river you will find the district of Oltarno, which is home to many of Florence’s modern artists. During the summer months a visit to the lush Boboli gardens is sure not to disappoint, with its inviting hidden pathways and fine fountains stepped into a hilly landscape.

With the wealth of sites to see in Florence, a single visit isn’t likely to suffice as one should always go for quality over quantity. Scattered throughout the city is a huge variety of hotels, which compared to other European, can appear a little pricey at first glance.

If you are backpacking across Europe, it’s important to pack only the essentials. Even if you are a clotheshorse or fashion guru, it’s just not possible to lug around a ton of heavy bags while traveling on foot. As long as you keep the mundane stuff like clothes and shoes down to a minimum, you can make room for a few extras in your backpack that will make your vacation more enjoyable.

Here are our top picks for what to include in your backpack if you have room:

Lonely Planet Guide. These travel guides are the Bible for economy travelers. They can be chunky, but we just don’t have the heart to tear pages out of these books. They are well-written, interesting, and fun to read. You won’t want to miss a single page.

Global Positioning Device. This is such a cool electronic gadget when you’re doing a lot of walking from town to town. It’s also handy to have when you don’t want to lug around a bunch of different maps. You’ll find yourself relying on it more and more as you navigate around the globe.

Travel towels. If you’ll be staying in hostels while you backpack across various countries, you’ll appreciate having at least one travel towel. Although you can rent the towels available at hostels, they aren’t always appealing. Travel towels are also great if you are caught in an unexpected downpour or need to wash up in a public restroom. They dry quickly and fit into a tiny corner of your backpack.

Photos of friends and family. We know you won’t forget what your family looks like and we aren’t getting sentimental. Having a few snapshots with you is a great icebreaker when you’re traveling. Backpacking is the perfect opportunity to meet locals and strike up conversations. You’ll be amazed by how people warm up to you when you pull out a few pictures of your family and friends from “back home.”

Inflatable neck pillow. Trust us on this one, you’ll find yourself sleeping somewhere uncomfortable at least once while backpacking. It may be a metro station, a beach, or the back seat of a bus. When you’re curled-up tight and shoved into a corner, you’ll be thanking the stars you thought to bring an inflatable pillow so you sleep without getting a permanent crick in your neck.

Compass. It’s not just for camping. When you are lost in downtown London, trying to decipher a map and not sure which way you are facing, you can get your bearings by picking landmark and using your compass. Is Big Ben to the North or South of where you’re standing? That’s a good start for figuring out where you are.

Power bars and granola. The reason you’re walking across Europe with a backpack slung over your shoulder is to save money while you take in the sights. One of the biggest expenditures you’ll have is food, so stock your bag with power bars and granola. If you substitute one of these high-energy goodies for a meal each day, your savings could add up and you may be able to extend your trip.

Rain poncho. A lightweight vinyl or plastic rain poncho can fold into a tiny square and is amazingly versatile. Apart from the obvious protection from rain, you can also use your rain poncho as a tarp for picnic lunches, to wrap up wet items when you pack, and as a place to lay out clothing to dry overnight.

When you start packing, lay out everything that is essential first, and then add the items from this list that you’d like to take. See what fits and go from there. Pare things down until you get your bag to a manageable weight and you're ready to go. Remember – the less you take, the more you’ll enjoy the trip.

Travelling to Spain from the UK by land has always been a feat of endurance, but more and more holidaymakers are taking on the drive.

While you must take your hat off to those that try such a huge feat of driving, there are other factors that many holidaymakers forget about. Driving for those who drive for a living could expect a more favourable response.

Driving is a tiresome event. From Northern France to Almeria in Spain you can expect a 1500 mile drive. To speed the journey up you can use the toll roads through France and Spain. The expenses for these tolls vary from 10 Euros up the 35 Euros; plus you could expect to top up your fuel tank about 3 times. Fuel of course in France is more expensive than Spain, but both cheaper than the UK.

The total cost for tolls and fuel for such a journey would be: tolls approximately 150 Euros and fuel about 180 Euros. While that is a toil in itself on your wallet, if you have three other passengers you will have reached Southern Spain in an economic fashion. The Channel Crossing can vary with a car and four passengers varying from 120 Euros to 280 Euros. Suddenly the economy is put into question. But don't forget you need to find this expense and effort to do the return journey.

When planning a holiday we must consider both the financial cost and the human cost such as tiredness. Without doubt tiredness can spoil the holiday for the driver. Once the driver has waken in the morning he may feel reasonably fresh but by mid afternoon drowsiness and tiredness sets in for the rest of the day. This lethargy can stay around for a few more days into the holiday once the destination has been reached.

In this study, a comparison of the long drive and the costs involved, versus the airfare and the use of a hire car at your destination airport. Here are the results we found...

July and August are the only months that differ. So for 10 months of the year the financial cost to drive is more expensive than to fly out and use a family hire car. In fact the comparison means that you would save between 50 to 75% of the value of the long drive.

Meanwhile the extra hike in the airfares for the peak summer season brings the competition to an almost dead heat; with the only balancing factor being the driver tiredness. Fly and use a hire car and you will have a driver with you to enjoy the holiday. Drive down and you may find that the driver is more of a ghost for a few days while he or she recovers.

The overall conclusion from this study is the air flight puts less pressure on the family holiday than would a long drive. For those who thought the drive would be so much more economical need to go back and check their calculations.

Become a Green Traveller

The term 'Green Travel' probably makes you think of unshaven men in bad tracksuit pants taking a month long holiday in a treehouse. But green travel is nothing that drastic, in fact it doesnt even involve much in the way of sacrifice- all it is is a bit of effort into preserving the environment around you when you travel. And with one billion tourists gallivanting around the globe each year, its becoming imperative that as the individual we go the little extra distance to contributing positively to slowing down climate change. Green travel is also about tuning yourself into the local culture of your holiday destination, respecting the way of life there and positively inputting into the community. So what have we got to do to be a green traveller? Well Ive scoured the net and put together a few ideas- you'll be surprised at how easy it is. Lets make 'Green Travel' more than just the latest buzz word.

1.Firstly, when you fly anywhere make sure you offset the carbon emissions of your flight. This is done by paying a minimal amount to a carbon offset company, normally less than fifty bucks.

2.Most carbon is emitted when planes take off and land. Take a 'no flight holiday', or reduce your stopovers.

3.Pack as light as you can - the lower the weight of the plane, the lower the energy it requires.

4.Ensure you have shut down all the appliances in your house that use electricity, such as the central heating.

5.Try to reduce the amount of driving you do. Catch public transport to the airport. When you hire a car, choose the smallest engine possible or a hybrid if available. Walk or cycle where you can!

6.When choosing a hotel, check out their water treatment system- avoid ones that pump their effluent out to sea.

7.Also try and choose a hotel that is locally owned and run. Make sure the staff employed are from the local community, and not foreigners. There should be some element of 'giving back' to the local community.

8.There are eco-friendly hotels out there, you just need to find them. look for energy efficient lighting, solar power units, and toilets and showers with flow restrictions.

9.Go easy on the air con! Only use it if really necessary, and turn it off when you go out. Try save water too- short showers, no baths, turning taps off.

10.Dont get room service- head out to a local restaurant. This way you sample the local culture, support the local economy and take the pressure off the hotel resources.

11.Dont make coffee in your hotel room. This leaves waste in the form of sugar packets, plastic milk containers, plastic teaspoons etc. Head out to the local coffee shop instead!

12.If given the choice, use glass cups or mugs and not plastic ones. Less waste.

13.Unless you ask them not to, your sheets and towels will be washed every day. This isnt really necessary and is a waste of resources, so leave that 'do not disturb' sign up.

14.Turn off any unused lights!

15.Bring your own toiletries instead of using the little plastic, packaged ones in the hotel. If you do use them, take them home and re use them.

16.If you are going on a tour, choose smaller ones because their impact on the environment is not so severe.

17.Make sure your tour guide is local, and find out how the tour gives back to the community.

18.If its a hiking tour youre on, dont veer off the marked trails and disrupt as little vegetation as possible. Give the local wildlife its space.

19.When snorkelling or scuba diving dont touch the coral, or try and interfere with the marine life.

20.Do a bit of homework about the traditions and cultures of the local people in the area you are visiting. Be sensitive to dress and behaviour codes. For instance skirts of a certain length may be acceptable in some parts of the world, but in others they would be considered too short.

21.Learn a few words of the local language. This helps you bond with the people you interact with and is always appreciated by locals.

So there you have it - travelling green isnt going to kill you. Every little bit helps, so even if we can remember to do just a few of the things on this list we are going some way to benefiting the planet. So take it all on board and enjoy your green holiday!

The beauty of Queensland is its diversity, and one fantastic way to experience this is to head west towards the red heart of Australia to the largest town in the southern central outback. The journey from Brisbane to Charleville is well travelled, rich in history and abundant in natural attractions. Located 750km west from Brisbane, via the garden city of Toowoomba, this is the perfect destination for an outback campervan holiday.

Having lived in Roma for a number of years, my outback experience was more than I expected. The magnificent sunsets, night skies sprayed with millions of stars and vast open spaces that pan for miles on end are just some of the highlights. Weather conditions vary, so come prepared with lots of woollens as temperatures drop at night especially in the winter months, and bring sunscreen and hats as temperatures soar in hot summer days.However, most days especially in Spring and Autumn bring pleasant warm days.

The drive from Brisbane takes about six hours to Roma, and then another three hours to Charleville. This can be undertaken in one day, but be careful at dusk as kangaroos jump out of nowhere. You might want to drive straight through or visit some of the delightful towns on the way such as Toowoomba, Dalby, Chinchilla and Roma. It is better to take your time and enjoy the richness each town has to offer. Maybe stop for a night and take in the colours of dusk and dawn, and enjoy a campfire under the stars.

The people are the greatest commodity of the outback, and Charleville is home to many of them. What impressed me the most was the friendliness and ease you feel when getting to know the locals who always seem to have enough time for a chat, especially at smoko when the town grinds to a sudden halt for their coffee break. They are a hardy lot, having battled many droughts and floods, but for the four thousand or so locals, community is everything. Water is the other precious resource out here, also needed to keep the thousands of sheep and cattle alive in the stations surrounding Charleville.

When you arrive you will need to set up your home away from home so the main choices are the Bailey Bar Caravan Park, in the heart of Charleville, also close to the new Cosmos Centre, and Cobb and Co Caravan Park on Ridgeway Street, set in bushland and within walking distance of town. Then stroll down to the centre of town and get to know your neighbours.

There is so much to do here, with the famous Warrego River always a great place to explore. Keen fishermen and amateurs alike will love the yellowbelly, perch and murray cod which go well with a crackling camp fire. 10 Mile is a common meeting place for locals, located a few minutes north of town. There is a cosy camping ground here, the perfect location for a picnic and relaxing snooze. The further you go from here, the better the fishing and star gazing! The Warrago Highway (also known as Augathella Road) offers one of the best kept secrets in the west, with plentiful fishing spots along the river and beautiful scenery.

Historical House is worth a visit, with plenty of historical memorabilia and artefacts giving you a better look at Charleville in the last century. Another is the 'Steiger Gun', located on the south side of town. It is one of the ten guns used in an attempt to break a century old drought, and has a quirky story attached to it. The invention never worked, but the gun still remains as a Charleville icon.

Charleville is also home to the Queensland Royal Flying Doctor Service as well as the School of Distance Education. There are countless remote properties being helped in many ways by these services, such a different way of life to us suburban dwellers.

One of the biggest drawcards to date is the Cosmos Centre, offering an interactive tour of the sky at night as well as presentations and interactive displays by day.There are plenty of indescribable views of the heavens here for all the family. With the current credit crunch affecting the UK holiday maker more people are getting back to their childhood roots and heading to the many UK coasts for a caravan holiday.

A caravan holiday is a perfect way to enjoy local attractions and beautiful scenery that the UK has to offer.

A lovely part of the UK is in South Wales where I frequent quite often on my travels, there is a lovely caravan park near Tenby in Pembrokeshire called Kiln Park operated by Haven Holidays, and I've visited the park numerous times and find that the location is ideal for the family and within reach of the large golden sandy beach.

Accommodation at the park ranges from superior to prestige caravans, so depending on the level of luxury and space required these are good choices, as a family of 3, I found the superior level of caravan was perfect, although if you want more facilities and a slightly larger caravan choose the next level up, the superior plus caravan model.

Each caravan has the same base facilities such as shower room & toilet, kitchen area, which is perfect for those meals in as there is an onsite convenience store which caters from all the basics needed to cook in the caravan.

The caravan park itself has many facilities onsite to keep even the most energetic of family busy.

Evening entertainment is aplenty at Kiln Park so won't fall short of any expectations you may have, our family took a trip last year in July and was fortunate to catch a comedy performance one evening, the comedian had everyone in stitches and another evening a variety act was on which the family really enjoyed. One thing we had been told that these performances are seasonal and run in July & August, the dates can differ as to when they are on.

Other fun activities include daytime shows such as pantomimes, these are available from July to August, and other family shows from the parks mascots run throughout the season which is open from March to November.

From the indoor and outdoor pools for swimming activities, of course you can't be certain of the weather in the UK so the outdoor pool is subject to the weather.

All in all a caravan holiday in the UK is not only an eco-friendly holiday but also pumps our cash back into our UK economy.
